Patrick's Eagle Project, July 2016

Patrick's Eagle Project was to make improvements to the town beach at Comin's Pond, by installing two additional permanent benches adjacent to the swimming area; to clean up some weed growth that was coming through the beach sand and to clean out the lilly pad weed growth that was encroaching on the swimming area. The completion of this project will add to a better experience for our townspeople who enjoy the town beach.

Patrick got friends, family and the scout troop together on a Saturday to start the project. First, he measured out where the benches would be placed, marking out where holes needed to be dug. He directed us how large and deep the holes needed to be. At the same time, he got a group of scouts together to work in the water by pulling out the weeds.

It took a while to get all the holes down to the required depth. Meanwhile, Patrick had others measuring and cutting the wood. Once both the holes and wood were prepared, he put it all together, permanently securing it in the earth using concrete.

The boys continued to pull out weeds all day long - there was so much growth. We ended up pulling out about 300+lbs when they were done. Patrick will be returning the following day with more friends to finish pulling out the remaining weeds that the scouts didn't get on this day.

The benches Patrick built as part of this project will last for a long time and will add to the enjoyment of the townspeople as they are able to have a comfortable place to sit while watching the children swim in the swimming area at the pond.

Liam's Life Project, July 2016

While we were selling spaghetti supper tickets for Patrick's Eagle Project fundraiser, the Friends of the Town Hall had approached Liam to ask if any scouts were looking for a project, because they had one that needed to get done. Surprisingly, Liam was looking for one to help finish earning Life rank.

They had explained that the courtyard behind the town hall needed some restoration and cleanup. Two doors needed repainting; the bulkhead needed moldy buildup cleaned off and to be painted; loads of vines and overgrowth needed to be removed from the back area; the picnic table needed refurbishing and the new front door to the police station needed the trim around it painted.

It was quite a bit of work, but with everybody coming together to help it was done in just about four hours. The courtyard looks much better and has been restored to a place anyone walking by can stop, rest and enjoy a little piece of town history.

Completion of Heath's Eagle Project

On September 20th, Heath got a crew together to help him complete his Eagle Project.  We carried all the tools and materials to the brook where the bridge was to be installed.  Part of the crew worked on assembling the bridge, while the other part went up and down the trail, cleaning it up and refurbishing it.  We all worked together for several hours to complete the project.  It came out very well.  Good job, Heath.

Starting Heath's Eagle Project

Heath's Eagle Project is to refurbish a walking trail that goes around Commins Pond and to build a 16' bridge over a stream that crosses that path about half way around the pond.  On 9/13/14 the troop started building the frame, with Heath directing the activities and helping finish it right.  He got everybody working together and we got the frame built in short time, and looking great.  We will meet next week to transport the frame, install the bridge and refurbish the trail, finishing the project.  It is coming along well and will be super when it's finished.

Patrick's Life Project, May, 2014

Patrick has been working on his Life rank and for that, he needs to do a service project.  He had approached the Warren Senior Center and asked them if he could do a project for them.  They told Patrick that their old, plastic flower boxes, in the front windows, were falling apart and they would like a nice, sturdy wooden flower box there.  Patrick took measurements, made plans and purchased the materials.  The troop helped Patrick measure and mark the wood, which Patrick cut to length.  They all took turns at drilling pilot holes and driving screws into the wood, to assemble the large, wooden flower box.  Later, they all sanded and painted it together.  Patrick installed it once it was completed and boy, it looks nice on the building.
