In a ceremony held on Monday, March. 10, the eight Senior Webelos of Cub Scout Pack 25, Horseheads, received the Arrow of Light Award. The Arrow of Light is the highest award received in Cub Scouts and an award that moves up with the recipient to Boy Scouts.
The ceremony was held at the Center Street Elementary School and officiated by Pack Cubmaster, Brian Spencer and by longtime Cub Scout volunteer, Christine Gagliardo. The Cubmaster gave each scout the Boy Scout handshake as his parent pinned the Arrow of Light emblem to his uniform.
The recipients of the award are Camrin D., Andrew O., Kaleb S., Jacob S., Devon W., Daniel W., Kaden Z. and Kieran Z. Together, along with their leader, Michael Sherwood, and assistant leaders, Mark Ochab and Dave DePrimo and Den Chief, Dominic M. of Troop 3044, they have been completing the requirements for the Arrow of Light and learning what it means to be a Boy Scout and a good citizen. The Scouts of Pack 25 have recently completed several community service projects including participation in Scouting for Food and caroling for the Salvation Army Kettle Drive.
To be eligible for the award, a Scout must be active in a Webelos Den for at least six months and have earned the Webelos badge. He must be knowledgeable of the requirements to become a Boy Scout including the oath, law, slogan, and motto as well as understanding the significance of the First Class Scout badge and uniform. The Scout must participate in an outdoor activity with a Boy Scout troop, attend a meeting with the troop, and go on a Webelos campout. He is also required to earn a total of eight activity badges.
The national average for receiving this honor is 71 percent, but 100 percent of this Webelos den earned the award. At the close of the ceremony the eight scouts crossed a ceremonial bridge into Boy Scouts. On the other side of the bridge the scouts were welcomed by Scoutmasters and youth leaders of their new Boy Scout troops.
